Most people find out they have osteoporosis the hard way. Someone steps off a curb, hears a crack, and learns in the emergency room that their bones have been thinning for years. There was no pain along the way and no swelling, so nothing prompted a doctor visit. The disease stays quiet until the moment it breaks something.

The Day Of Respect For Cultural Diversity.

Here is where I'll take a side. Tolerance is a low bar. You tolerate a neighbor's loud television, a cousin's politics at Christmas dinner. Respect asks for something with more effort in it: curiosity. Respecting a culture means assuming it makes sense from the inside, even when you don't yet know how. That assumption costs nothing and changes almost every conversation that follows. The person who believes your customs are strange will explain you to others as a curiosity. The person who believes they are probably reasonable will ask you a question.

USA National Be Nice Day. A Holiday With No Author

Today is October 5, National Be Nice Day, and nobody can say who started it. The websites that list the day agree on the date and on very little else. One concedes that the exact origins are unknown. Another says the day began as a bright idea to put more positivity into the internet, then admits in the following sentence that the beginnings are hazy.

The Work Nobody Budgeted For. International Artist Day

On 25 October, a Sunday this year, plenty of people will post a Picasso quote and a photo of someone's paint-stained hands. International Artist Day invites that sort of thing. Chris MacClure, a Canadian painter, started it in 2004
